1. I have had a number of students use this cushion or a similar type.  Most knew if it helped them or not after using it a few times.  For some of the children, it was very helpful as it gave them a way to move in a more controlled (and less distracting!) manner.  In fact, I would just love to purchase a few to keep in school for kids to try out and use when needed.  Anyone find a place to get them at a reasonable cost?
2. I have found a powerful tool in helping students with self esteem is demystification- having a series of discussions with a student or group of students about their strengths AND weaknesses.  It is a process and does not happen overnight, but creating a classroom climate where we talk about what our challenges are helps a lot.  Also, sharing my own particular challenges with the students is helpful as we discuss ways to work around them as well as ways we can work together to help.
3. Teachers seem to be more interested in what they can actually do to help a student rather than all the specifics of a student's learning disability.  Providing targeted intervention strategies that are tailored to the student that can actually work in the classroom often seems to be a more effective way to help teachers and students.
4. like many of the modifications provide "excuses" and enable these students rather than teach tem important life skills.
